🧨 Trump’s War on VA Unions: What’s Really Going On?

As the headlines pile up about cuts, gag orders, and RIFs at the Department of Veterans Affairs, it’s easy to lose track of the big picture. But make no mistake: this is not just about budget “rightsizing” or government efficiency.

This is a coordinated attack on VA workers, their unions, and the veterans they serve.

In just the past few weeks:

  • Trump’s Executive Order 14210 aimed to strip collective bargaining rights from most federal employees by falsely labeling their work as “national security” related.
  • Secretary Doug Collins rubber-stamped this move at the VA, blocking contracts for tens of thousands of union workers—even though many non-union workers doing the same jobs are exempt.
  • Payroll deduction of union dues has been canceled, forcing unions like AFGE, NNU, and SEIU to scramble to enroll members in E-dues.
  • RIF plans targeting 80,000 VA workers are moving ahead under cover of secrecy and NDAs.
  • And now, even probationary workers are being fired en masse with no due process, leaving union locals fighting back on every front.

“Taken together, all of these actions are aimed at crippling and then privatizing the VA. . . . And only the unions are standing in the way of privatization.”

— Irma Westmoreland, NNU Secretary-Treasurer
