Why We’re Moving Out of the Union Office — and What It Means for You
On Wednesday, the Department of Veterans Affairs terminated most of its union contracts nationwide.
This includes AFGE Local 2328’s agreement covering our office space here at Hampton VAMC.
We’ve been ordered to vacate our union office by Tuesday, August 12. We are packing this weekend and will move on Saturday.
This is not unique to Hampton — VA facilities across the country are being hit with the same order.
What’s Happening
- On Wednesday, the Department of Veterans Affairs terminated most of its union contracts nationwide.
- This includes AFGE Local 2328’s agreement covering our office space here at Hampton VAMC.
- We’ve been ordered to vacate our union office by Tuesday, August 12. We are packing this weekend and will move on Saturday.
- This is not unique to Hampton — VA facilities across the country are being hit with the same order.
Why It’s Happening
- This stems from President Trump’s January executive order that removed collective bargaining rights from about two-thirds of federal employees.
- The VA is the first federal agency to fully carry it out.
- The move ignores guidance from the Office of Personnel Management telling agencies to hold off while lawsuits are still pending.
- AFGE National believes this is part of a broader plan to weaken unions and privatize VA health care by cutting jobs and silencing the workforce.
What It Means for You
- We are still your union. Even without a physical office inside the VA, Local 2328 remains here to represent you.
- You still have your union rights under law — including the right to representation in meetings, grievances, and disputes.
- Without a CBA in effect, some office space, official time, and facility access may be restricted — but your right to representation is not gone.
- You may notice slower response times as we adjust to working offsite, but we are putting systems in place to stay connected.

- AFGE National is challenging this in court.
- We expect legal updates in the coming weeks — and we’ll keep you informed.
- In the meantime, stay in touch and document any workplace issues so we can continue to protect your rights.
Your union is not a building — it’s all of us, standing together.
We will not be silenced, and we will not back down.
