Virginia’s Redistricting Vote Is Coming Fast — Here’s What You Need to Know
On April 21, Virginia voters will decide on a constitutional amendment allowing mid-decade congressional redistricting. Here's why it matters for federal employees — and how to vote early starting March 6.
On April 21, Virginia voters will decide on a constitutional amendment that would allow the General Assembly to redraw the state’s congressional district maps before 2031.
Why now?
Several states — including Texas and Missouri — have already redrawn their congressional maps mid-decade to boost their party’s advantage. This amendment would let Virginia respond in kind, giving the legislature authority to conduct redistricting between now and October 2030.
The Virginia Supreme Court greenlit the special election on February 13 after a lower court initially blocked it. The legal fight isn’t over — the court still has to rule on whether the process itself was constitutional — but the vote is happening.
Why this matters for federal employees
Congressional district maps determine who represents you in Washington. For VA employees in Hampton Roads, that means the representatives who fight for staffing levels, facility funding, and collective bargaining protections. Maps that accurately reflect our communities mean better representation on the issues that affect our jobs and our families.
Our position: Vote YES.
