Lawmakers Form New Federal Workforce Caucus to Defend Civil Servants
A bipartisan group of more than two dozen lawmakers from the House and Senate have formed the Federal Workforce Caucus — a new congressional body dedicated to supporting and strengthening the federal civilian workforce.
The caucus was launched by Congressman Kweisi Mfume (D-MD), Senator Chris Van Hollen (D-MD), and Representatives James Walkinshaw (D-VA) and Steny Hoyer (D-MD), with Virginia Senator Mark Warner among the members. The caucus is focused on protecting civil servants through legislation, advocacy, and dialogue.
“We need to build on this seismic victory in the House and get immediate action in the Senate,” the effort builds on the momentum from December’s House passage of the Protect America’s Workforce Act.
Democracy Forward President Skye Perryman noted: “Over the past year, people and communities have protested, lawyers have sued, and courts have issued orders to protect our civil servants. It is an honor today to mark the establishment of a bipartisan, bicameral congressional caucus to support the people who work for all us.”
Why It Matters for Local 2328
Virginia is well-represented. Senator Mark Warner and Rep. James Walkinshaw are founding members. Hampton Roads is home to one of the largest concentrations of federal employees in the country — this caucus exists because of workers like you.
This matters beyond symbolism. A formal caucus means dedicated staff, regular hearings, and a louder voice in budget fights. When the next attack on your pay, benefits, or bargaining rights comes to the floor, there’s now an organized block of lawmakers whose entire purpose is to push back.
Contact Senator Warner’s office and thank him. Then ask what the caucus plans to do about Schedule Policy/Career.
