AFGE Members Persevere in 2025 Despite Historic Challenges
2025 was a year like no other for federal workers. From mass firings to executive orders stripping union rights to government shutdowns, AFGE members faced an unprecedented assault on our jobs, our rights, and our livelihoods. But we fought back — and we’re still standing.
AFGE’s national year-in-review highlights what our union accomplished in the face of historic challenges:
- Wage Grade workers nearly went another year without a pay raise — but AFGE’s advocacy ensured it didn’t happen
- Court victories blocked multiple administration attempts to gut civil service protections
- Membership held strong even as the administration tried to intimidate workers into dropping their union
- AFGE filed and won lawsuits challenging illegal firings, CBA terminations, and due process violations
- Congressional allies stepped up, with bipartisan legislation to protect collective bargaining rights advancing in the House
For the tens of thousands of federal workers paid hourly under the Wage Grade system, 2025 will be remembered for what almost happened — and what the union stopped.
Why It Matters for Local 2328
Hampton Roads VA employees lived every one of these battles. The uncertainty over Wage Grade pay raises hit our blue-collar workforce directly. The threats to our CBA affected every bargaining unit member. The firings and “reduction in force” threats created anxiety in every hallway of the Hampton VA.
But here’s what 2025 also proved: the union works. When management pushes, we push back. When the administration goes to court, AFGE goes to court — and wins. When Congress needs to hear from federal workers, we show up.
2026 will bring more fights. We’ll be ready.
